Spring is Coming: Protecting Your Home from the Rogue Valley Ant Surge

Published March 11, 2026 | By Grizzly Pest Solutions

As the winter chill lifts from the Rogue Valley, the local ecosystem starts to wake up—and that includes the millions of Odorous House Ants (often called "sugar ants") that call Southern Oregon home. While they’ve been dormant during our cold months, the rising soil temperatures are a dinner bell for these colonies.

Why the Surge Happens Now

In the valley, our spring rains followed by sudden warm spells create a high-pressure environment for ant colonies. As their nests become saturated with rain, they seek higher, drier ground. Often, that ground happens to be your kitchen, bathroom, or crawlspace.

"A single Odorous House Ant colony can house thousands of workers and multiple queens. By the time you see ten ants on your counter, there are likely thousands more behind the wall."

Three Things You Can Do Today

Before the "scouts" find a way in, take these three steps to protect your perimeter:

  • Clear the Perimeter: Ensure mulch, leaf litter, and woodpiles are at least 12 inches away from your foundation. These act as "ant highways" directly into your home.
  • Manage Moisture: Check your crawlspace vents and outdoor spigots. Ants are attracted to moisture as much as they are to food.
  • Seal the Gaps: Use a high-quality caulk to seal gaps where utility lines or pipes enter the house.

The Grizzly Approach

Most store-bought sprays only kill the ants you see, which actually triggers a biological response called "budding," where the colony splits and grows even faster. At Grizzly, we use advanced baiting and non-repellent barriers that the ants carry back to the heart of the nest, ensuring the problem is solved at the source—not just hidden.
